Christian Dance Music

Do you love dance music but feel concerned about the lyrics that do not uphold your Christian faith? Enter Producer/Artist Kevin Foulger of Newton Apple.

Dance Before The King, the latest 15 track album is a Christ centred project with many inspired dance rhythms that could be played on most dance floors.

"My biggest hero would have to be Jesus Christ". Why Newton Apple?

Explain the name Newton Apple. It comes from the band I formed in 1992 called Isaac Newton’s Apple. We had about one jam session but what we recorded that day was formed into an album of cover versions, improvisations and songs we’d written.

What influenced you to create dance before the King?

Jesus Christ. Some people might gasp when I mention the name Jesus and think what on earth has He got to do with dance music?

I’m a man who strongly believes in the spiritual realm, and it is the bad side of this that is having a very powerful and devastating effect on the dance scene.

People now preach freedom in the areas of sex and drugs. But people who think they’re free in these areas may become hurt when relationships go wrong. Drugs can have a damaging affect on people’s lives.

It is as if we now live in a very insecure society that is living day to day with no vision for the future and certainly not for eternity.

Describe how you made the album

Dance Before The King started out with sessions of ploughing through samples on E-jay sound collections volume one. When I worked out what would fit and what wouldn’t I began importing the samples. (Dance Before The King was the winner of an E-Jay competition, the review can be found on the Newton Apple website.)

It’s not the first time I’ve done well in such a competition. In 1994 I came runner up in the Radio One young DJ contest. It was a creative show I put together on tape and it was briefly played on-air back in the days of Steve Wright who did the breakfast show.

Vision

He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. Psalm 40 v 3.
What are your musical influences and what’s your favourite music?

There are some excellent Christian dance bands. One is The Tribe, also JC Culture and Raze. DC Talk are one of my favourite Contemporary Christian music bands, also Jars of Clay, Plum, Newsboys, The Super Tones, and Rebekah St. James.

Who is your biggest hero and why?

My biggest hero would have to be Jesus Christ. He is a friend who sticks closer than a brother and is always there for me. The person who has inspired me most from a musical point of view is Ann Dudley, from The Art Of Noise. She wrote the sound track for the film The Miracle Maker.

Where do you want to be in two years time?

In two years time I would hope to have had my first novel published. I finished it once but I’m currently redrafting it. I’m determined to give it everything that I’ve got. I would also like to have my own recording studio. Future plans are to start sampling worship albums.

Kevin Foulger is a strong Christian who has walked a path of discipleship and sacrifice in producing Christian e-vangelical dance music. Keep your eyes on Newton Apple and watch out for it on ByFaith TV.
