The celebration of Halloween goes back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhane, the god of the dead. This was the
night they thought the barrier between the human and the supernatural worlds was broken down.
In Celtic and Anglo Saxon times it was also the eve of the New Year and bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits.
People thought that the spirits of the dead, ghosts and demons visited the earth at this time.
At other times it was felt that this was a good evening to invoke the Devil's help concerning marriage, health,
one's enemies etc.
