An Israeli firm ‘Ido Security’ has developed a step-up scanner called the ‘safeshoe’, which is briefcase sized and will be used in conjunction with the standard X Ray arch designed to spare travellers the inconvenience of having to remove their shoes and be checked for hidden explosives at airports.
The device can also detect metal objects. Beware if you wear steel toe caps! The product was on final trials this year and is due to be marketed at around £6,600.
Footwear became a focus of aviation security world-wide after a suspected Islamic militant, Richard Reid, was arrested in December 2001 for allegedly attempting to detonate explosives stuffed in his shoes while on a flight from Paris to Miami.
