1. Carbohydrates are the simple sugars and more complex starch and fibre, which are found in plant foods, such as
vegetables, fruit, cereals and pulses. They are an essential structural component of living cells and source of energy.
2. Most of our energy should be provided by carbohydrates. The majority of carbohydrates easily break down into glucose,
which makes them the most accessible source of fuel for the body.
3. Carbohydrates should provide about fifty percent of a person’s total energy intake, mainly in the form of starchy
foods, such as rice and bread, breakfast cereals, pasta, potatoes and pulses.
4. Men should eat around 350 grams of carbohydrates and women 300 grams a day as part of a
balanced diet.
