Applications to universities have declined because of the Government’s move to make higher education more expensive.
The figures were released after a poll showed 78% of the public opposes the Government’s plan to allow universities to
treble their fees to £3,000.
The statistics were collected before the Government published its plans to allow higher fees.
The number of people seeking to do degrees and other higher education courses was up 1.8% by 15 January compared with
a near 4% rise the previous year.
Data from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) showed that, the number of mature student
applications was up 6.2%, those from under-21s only rose 0.5%, compared with a 2% increase a year ago.
